Sar Shalom ben Moses

قائد يهودي مصري في القرن 12

Sar Shalom ben Moses, also known as Zutta, was a prominent figure in the Egyptian Jewish community, serving as the nagid, or leader, of the community in Fustat. His tenure in this position was marked by two distinct periods, from 1170 to 1171 and again from approximately 1173 to 1195. As the last of the Egyptian geonim, he played a significant role in the Jewish community during this time.

Sar Shalom ben Moses' leadership was not without controversy, as he was involved in the practice of tax farming, which led to conflicts with notable figures such as Maimonides. As a result of these disputes, he was excommunicated on several occasions by Maimonides. Despite these challenges, Sar Shalom ben Moses remained a key figure in the Egyptian Jewish community until his death in 1204, leaving a lasting impact on the community he served.
