Moses Cyrus Weiler
Latvian-born South African rabbi
Moses Cyrus Weiler was a prominent figure in South African Judaism, born in Latvia. He played a pivotal role in establishing Reform Judaism in the country, serving as the founder of the movement. Weiler held key positions, including Chief Minister of the United Jewish Progressive Congregation and rabbi of Temple Israel in Hillbrow, Johannesburg. The latter congregation is notable as the mother synagogue of South Africa's Reform movement.
During his tenure, Weiler oversaw significant growth in the Reform movement, with 25 congregations being established under his guidance. His contributions had a lasting impact on the Jewish community in South Africa. In 1958, Weiler made aliyah to Israel, where he spent the remainder of his life. This marked a new chapter for the rabbi, as he transitioned to a new phase of his life in the Jewish state.
