Judah Leib Prossnitz
Jewish kabbalist and messiah claimant
Judah Leib Prossnitz was a Jewish kabbalist and messiah claimant born in the late 17th century in Uherský Brod, Moravia. His early life was marked by a humble existence, and he later relocated to Prostějov, also in Moravia, where he settled and started a family. In order to support himself, Prossnitz took on a peddling profession, traveling to nearby villages to sell his wares.
Despite his efforts to earn a living, Prossnitz's life was characterized by poverty, which led him to reside in a deserted and reportedly haunted hovel. It was within these modest circumstances that he developed his interests in kabbalistic studies, eventually gaining recognition as a kabbalist. Prossnitz's spiritual pursuits and claims of being a messiah figure were likely influenced by his experiences and the mystical traditions of his time, shaping his unique perspective within the Jewish community.
