Henri Leighton

American photographer, technical writer on photography, and craft jeweller (1917-2004)

Henri Leighton was a multifaceted American artist who made significant contributions to the field of photography. Born in 1917, Leighton developed a notable body of work, particularly in the mid-20th century, capturing poignant images of African-American children at play in urban environments. His photographs not only showcased his technical skill but also offered a unique glimpse into the lives of his subjects. In addition to his photography, Leighton was also a technical writer, sharing his expertise with others through his written work.

In a surprising career shift, Leighton abandoned photography in his fifties to pursue a new passion: jewellery-making. Despite having no formal training, he taught himself the craft and went on to create pieces that were commercially successful. This later chapter in his life demonstrated Leighton's adaptability and creativity, as he transitioned from behind the camera to the workbench. Leighton passed away in 2004, leaving behind a legacy that spanned two distinct artistic pursuits, each marked by his dedication and talent.
