Elijah Mizrachi
ثالث الحاخامباشوات في الدولة العثمانية
Elijah Mizrachi was a prominent figure in the realm of Jewish scholarship, renowned as a Talmudist and posek, or authority on Halakha. His expertise extended beyond the realm of religious law, as he was also a skilled mathematician. Although his work in astronomy is noted, it is his contributions to the field of Talmudic studies that have had the most lasting impact.
Mizrachi's most notable work is the Sefer ha-Mizrachi, a comprehensive supercommentary on Rashi's commentary on the Torah. This seminal work showcases his mastery of Jewish scripture and interpretation. He is often referred to by the Hebrew acronym Re'em, which stands for "Rabbi Elijah Mizrachi" and coincidentally shares its name with a biblical animal. Through his writings, particularly the Sefer ha-Mizrachi, Mizrachi has left an enduring legacy in the world of Jewish scholarship.
