Yehiel Nissim da Pisa
Yehiel Nissim da Pisa was a 16th-century Italian-Jewish figure who made significant contributions to various fields, including philosophy and finance. Born in 1507, he led a multifaceted career as a banker, writer, and philosopher, producing a range of written works that showcased his intellectual breadth. His writings encompassed treatises on credit, philosophy, usury, and loans, demonstrating a deep understanding of both financial and philosophical concepts.
Da Pisa's most notable work is the treatise Ma'amar ḥayei olam at inyan haribit, also referred to as Haye Olam or Eternal Life. In this work, he provides insight into the use of bills of exchange, a financial instrument that was gaining prominence during his time. Although his writings were not published during his lifetime, they circulated as manuscripts and were later published, allowing his ideas to reach a wider audience. Da Pisa passed away in 1574, leaving behind a legacy of thoughtful and informative writings that continue to be of interest to scholars today.
