Meir of Rothenburg
German rabbi and poet (c.1215–1293)
Meir of Rothenburg was a prominent German rabbi and poet, born around 1215. He was a key figure in the field of Judaism, making significant contributions to the tosafot on Rashi's commentary on the Talmud. Meir of Rothenburg is also known by his full name, Meir ben Baruch, and by the Hebrew acronym Maharam of Rothenburg. His expertise and leadership earned him great respect among his contemporaries.
Meir of Rothenburg's reputation as a leading Jewish authority is evident in the praise he received from Rabbi Menachem Meiri, who referred to him as the "greatest Jewish leader of Zarfat" of his time. Throughout his life, Meir of Rothenburg continued to make important contributions to Jewish scholarship, leaving a lasting legacy. He passed away on May 2, 1293, at the age of approximately 78, bringing an end to a long and distinguished career as a rabbi, poet, and scholar.
