Israel Sarug
Jewish kabbalist, student of Isaac Luria (1590–1610)
Israel Sarug was a Jewish kabbalist who studied under the renowned Isaac Luria from 1590 to 1610. Following his master's death, Sarug dedicated himself to disseminating Lurianic Kabbalah, gaining a significant following in various parts of Italy. His teachings attracted prominent figures, including Menahem Azariah da Fano and Aaron Berechiah of Modena, who were instrumental in promoting and preserving Luria's manuscripts and ideas.
Sarug's influence extended beyond Italy, as he lectured in numerous locations throughout Germany and in Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, he mentored Abraham Cohen de Herrera, among others. Through his efforts, Sarug played a crucial role in popularizing Lurianic Kabbalah, ensuring its continued study and influence in Jewish mystical traditions. His legacy as a key figure in the dissemination of Lurianic teachings has endured, reflecting his devotion to his master's work and his own contributions to the development of Jewish mysticism.
