Isaac of Chernigov

Isaac of Chernigov was a prominent Jewish scholar residing in the Kievan Rus' during the 12th century. His expertise in Biblical exegesis made him a sought-after consultant among his contemporaries, who frequently sought his guidance on matters related to scriptural interpretation. This reputation may have extended beyond his local community, as some historians believe he may be the same individual as Isaac of Russia, mentioned in English records from 1181.

Isaac of Chernigov's scholarly contributions had a lasting impact, as evidenced by the inclusion of his explanations in later works. For instance, his interpretation of the term "yabam" was quoted by Moses ben Isaac ha-Nessiah of London in his lexicon, Sefer ha-Shoham. Notably, Isaac's explanation of "yabam" drew a parallel with the Old East Slavic language, which has led scholars like Leopold Zunz and Abraham Harkavy to infer that the Jewish community in Rus' during his time was familiar with the local vernacular.
