Gershom Sizomu
Gershom Sizomu is a prominent figure in Ugandan Judaism, serving as the spiritual leader of the Abayudaya community. This community, located near the town of Mbale in eastern Uganda, is a unique Baganda group that practices Judaism. As a native-born Ugandan, Sizomu has made history by becoming the first black rabbi in Sub-Saharan Africa. His leadership extends beyond his community, as he holds the distinction of being the first Chief Rabbi of Uganda.
In addition to his religious roles, Sizomu has also been ordained as a rabbi in the United States, a notable achievement as the first member of the Abayudaya to receive this ordination. Beyond his religious pursuits, Sizomu is also involved in Ugandan politics, holding a seat in the Ugandan Parliament. Through his various roles, Sizomu has become a significant figure in both his community and the broader Ugandan society.
